The tragedy of Coriolan, by the enormously prolific and popular playwright Alexandre Hardy, offers an outstanding example of French tragic treatment of antique historical material in the baroque period. It also presents special interest as an intertext for Shakespeare’s adaptation of essentially the same material (Plutarch’s “Life of Coriolanus”), in Coriolanus (1608), which was probably closely contemporary, although the date of Hardy’s work is less certain. Richard Hillman’s introduction to his translation (the first in English) develops this approach, while Fabien Cavaillé’s introduction to his new edition of the French text provides a perspective on Hardy’s impressive artistry in its theatrical context.
La tragédie de Coriolan d’Alexandre Hardy, dramaturge énormément prolifique et populaire, sert d’exemple richement révélateur d’une tragédie française basée sur un matériau historique antique pendant l’âge baroque. Elle présente également un intérêt particulier comme un intertexte pour l’adaptation par Shakespeare d’essentiellement le même matériau (la « Vie de Coriolan » de Plutarque) dans Coriolanus (1608), œuvre qui était probablement presque contemporaine, bien que la date de la pièce de Hardy soit moins certaine.
