Géologie et construction dans le "De architectura" de Vitruve

Abstract : This thesis is a study on the vocabulary of geological materials and products resulting from these raw materials as mentioned in Vitruvius’ work written around 25 B. C. Each term is studied according to technical descriptions and archaeological data. The corpus involves a lexico-notional field of mineral materials and their derived products used in Roman architecture: quarry stone, sand, pozzolana, raw and backed brick, lime, mortars, coatings, pigments, opus caementicium, opus signinum, etc. The method of semantic study for each term is of the semasiologic type. The study starts with an etymological introduction, followed with a diachronic and semic synthesis of the term in the Latin literature before Vitruvius. It continues with a semantic and technical analysis, from a synchronic point of view. The occurrences and the monosemy or the polysemia of the term in Vitruvius’ work are listed and its various meanings are analysed according to their context. If the term is a manufactured good, the study of the contexts shows the Latin lexical complex units or Latin verbal syntagms describing the manufacture or the use of this product. Using technical descriptions or archaeological data, the study clarifies and explains Vitruvius’ text dedicated to the manufacture and use of this product. If the lexical item is used in a technical and scientific description, the analysis of the contexts helps to discover the scientific theories developed by Vitruvius (physics, chemistry, geology).
