Periurban mobility in France : a way of housing
L'automobilité périurbaine en France : une façon d'habiter

Automobility, a term with increasing use, is often understood as synonymous with automobile mobility. We sought to clarify its definition. That is to say, to verify the idea that the automobile "renders service" to its driver beyond the means of locomotion that it is, by acting on the organization of its daily life. We worked within the peri-urban area because it encompasses the best sites observations of automobile-related behaviors.
Looking at the relationship between automobile and peri-urbanization, we found that, for each new inhabitant, the installation in the peri-urban area carries a housing project that mobilizes a larger spatial portion than when considering the installation as a residential project. This housing project is based on the automobile, the only one to reach the various places that make it up. Thus, the definition of automobility derives from the explanatory factors of the link between automobile and habitat.
Automobilité, terme connaissant un usage croissant, est souvent entendu comme synonyme de mobilité automobile. Nous avons cherché à préciser sa définition. C’est-à-dire vérifier l’idée selon laquelle l’automobile “rend service” à son conducteur au-delà du moyen de locomotion qu’elle est, en agissant sur l’organisation de sa vie quotidienne. Nous avons travaillé dans le cadre de l’espace périurbain car il englobe les meilleurs sites d’observations des comportements en rapport avec l’automobile. En se penchant sur les rapports entre automobile et périurbanisation nous avons décelé que, pour chaque nouvel habitant, l’installation dans le périurbain porte un projet d’habitat qui mobilise une portion spatiale plus importante que lorsque l’on considère l’installation comme un projet résidentiel. Ce projet d’habitat repose sur l’automobile, seule à permettre de rejoindre les différents lieux qui le constituent. Ainsi, la définition de l’automobilité découle des facteurs explicatifs du lien entre automobile et habitat.
