Commemorating the Christian Martyr and the Civil War Hero in Lucy Hutchinson’s Memoirs of the Life of Colonel Hutchinson

Résumé

For Lucy Hutchinson, who did not want “oblivion’s curtaine” to be drawn over the Colonel’s “dead face”, the “preservation of his memory” was the reason why she decided to write his “life” after his death in captivity in 1664. John Hutchinson was indeed, she writes, “[t]his excellent person whom I desire to commemorate to you”. Her fear, however, was to “disgrace” the Colonel’s name with “a poor monument”. This paper proposes to look at the Memoirs as “a monument” which celebrates John Hutchinson both as a Civil War hero and a Protestant martyr. In order to do so, it will look at the different ways in which a reformed outlook is interwoven with a humanist ethos in the dedication’s portrait of the Colonel, in the account of his death and funeral, as well as on the stone monument which Lucy Hutchinson commissioned for the Church at Owthorpe. Finally, it shall be argued that Lucy Hutchinson’s memorialization of her husband is not only a private testimony, but, first and foremost, a polemical attempt to resist the Stuart monarchy’s plan to cast into oblivion the memory of the “great rebellion” and of its Puritan heroes.
