Writing the Revolution and Utopia : Création et Rédemption by Alexandre Dumas Father

Résumé
This article examines the representation of utopia and its questioning in Création et Rédemption, the very last great novel by Dumas Father. The author studies first the singular figure of the utopist embodied by Jacques Mérey, the hero of the novel ; she then looks at the representation and analysis of the revolutionary utopia and of its drifts proposed by the novelist. She finally examines what happens to this utopia in the eyes of Dumas after 1793, and questions more directly the functions of Dumas’ writing in the light of the aspirations of the « almost utopian republicanism of the heart » characterizing the writer.
L’article examine la représentation de l’utopie et son questionnement dans Création et Rédemption, le tout dernier grand roman de Dumas Père. L’auteure étudie d’abord la figure singulière d’utopiste qu’incarne Jacques Mérey, le héros du roman ; elle envisage ensuite la représentation et l’analyse de l’utopie révolutionnaire et de ses dérives proposées par le romancier, avant de se demander ce qu’il advient après 1793 de l’utopie aux yeux de Dumas, et de poser plus frontalement la question des fonctions de l’écriture dumasienne au regard des aspirations de ce « républicanisme de cœur, quasiment utopique » qui caractérise l’écrivain.
