Struggling against species extinctions versus conserving ordinary nature: an historical survey of naturalists’ attitudes between mid-19th and mid-20th centuries

part in contemporary refl ections about nature and its protection. Most often, actors and researchers consider that this
concern for this “ordinary nature” is recent and that the questions about its state and its future are new. However, as soon as
the idea of protecting nature was nascent, in the 19th century, the question already arose: why protect? A second question
quickly follows: what kind of nature to protect? And once this became more or less defi ned, then came: how to ensure
protection? Obviously the answers to these questions may be variable according to the temporal, spatial and societal, but
also the scientifi c contexts. Examining the original ways of thinking of naturalists about these questions makes it possible
to identify how far the concern for the “banal”, “common” nature may have contributed to the development of a thought
favorable to protection, to the defi nition and the implementation of actions, and this as soon as the very beginning, from
mid19th to mid20th centuries. This historical approach highlights some keys to better understanding the current situation
regarding nature protection, by discerning the inheritances, the permanence and, at the same time, the changes, the
innovations, at the moment when the notions of anthropocene and 6th extinction are essential.
Le souci d’une nature banale, commune, familière, anthropisée et souvent utilitaire a pris une part significative dans les réflexions sur la nature et sa protection. Bien souvent, les acteurs ou les chercheurs considèrent que ce souci de cette « nature ordinaire » est récent et que les questionnements sur son état et son devenir sont neufs. Examiner certaines origines permet d’identifier la part qu’a pris le souci de la nature « banale », « commune », dans l’élaboration d’une pensée favorable à la protection, dans la définition et la mise en œuvre d’actions, dans les premières réalisations (mi XIXe – mi XXe siècle). Cette démarche historienne révèle quelques clés de compréhension de la situation actuelle en discernant les héritages, les permanences et en même temps les changements, les innovations, à une époque où les notions d’anthropocène et de 6e extinction s’imposent.
