Quand la littérature de jeunesse scandinave se met à l'heure viking : La reconstruction d'un mythe

Abstract : The Viking era is a comun subject in today’s literature and popular culture. This article aims to analyze the image transmitted by Scandinavian youth literature. In accordance with the important pedagogical intention in this genre, the authors want to pass on knowledge and give a historically reasonable vision, and even to correct received ideas. Desacralized, the Viking becomes more complex. Mythological figures are revisited to become more nuanced. It is above all a question of transmitting positive values of that time, such as courage and honor, but also equality, while denouncing for example violence and slavery. Putting children and women in the center and talk about ordinary life are also a way of correcting historiography. Thus, this era, considered as the starting point for Scandinavian cultures, remains important for Nordic identity since it represents a common mythical past. Reinterpreted, it maintains its place in the collective memory and can function as a contemporary ideal.
