Les sirènes du Nord. Analyse des constructions de la féminité dans les œuvres de métal nordique

Abstract : In the Nordic region, the heavy metal genre has developed remarkably since the end of the 1980s, and has become one of the most distinctive symbols of Nordic popular culture abroad. Since its birth at the end of the 1960s, the heavy metal genre has been strongly associated with the notion of masculinity. Regardless, several internationally-famous heavy metal bands, including Nordic ones, include female singers or, more rarely, musicians or composers. Despite this, female artists and the representation of women in the metal genre are recent research themes, which have received little attention in the francophone part of metal studies. This case study first presents an overview of constructions of femininity that are present in Nordic metal lyrics, sounds, videos and album covers. Secondly, these constructions are contrasted with the idealised image of the Nordic area as an exemplar of equality between men and women. The focus will be placed on Nordic bands and artists with established careers, who have released several albums and achieved international recognition.
