Les avortements à herpèsvirus équin 1

Abstract : Abortions caused by equine herpesvirus 1. Abortions caused by equine herpesvirus 1 remain the first cause of viral abortion in the mare. It is the most frequently identified cause of abortion in France and represents 7% of cases. This level, which is lower than during the last century, is also found in most countries which breed horses. Although vaccination has contributed to a reduction in cases, it must be improved. Even though vaccination provides good collective protection, it s individual effectiveness is never infallible. This is partly due to the characteristics of the virus since it can persist in a latent state in animals. Faced with this finding, medical prophylaxis must be reinforced via health protection measures: avoid stress, survey the entry of animals into the stud-farm, group management of animals, isolate infected horses and reduce the exchanges with the exterior.
