COLLECT IN AQUEOUS PHASE OF PAH PRESENT AT TRACE LEVELS IN AN AIR STREAM AND QUANTIFICATION BY SPE-HPLC

Résumé

In the context of European project CRAFT, a new technique of sampling was developped to prove the presence or not of volatile Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, at trace levels, in an air stream from the outlet of air cleaning up pilot by means of cold plasmolysis. The vaporized PAH were collected into a liquid phase by bubbling and not by classical solid phase extraction, to avoid any loss of the volatile compounds. Indeed such a loss was commonly observed by using solid phase extraction during the re-concentration step by solvent evaporation. A home made device was used to generate volatile PAH in a gaz state (naphtalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene and fluoranthene) in order to optimize the collecting process. A study was carried out to determine:-the number of collecting bottles,-the nature of frits for air-bubbling,-the collecting temperature,-the maximum air flow-rate,-and the nature and concentration of a chemical additive. So several cationic, non ionic, and anionic surfactants were tested, and also tetraalkyl ammonium salts. The aqueous media so obtained, that were highly diluted (PAH concentrations lower than 1 ng.L-1), were then concentrated by Solid-Phase Extraction (SPE) on hydrophobic home-made cartridge and directly analysed by on-line HPLC fitted with an UV diode array detector and a programmable fluorescence detector. The high sensitivity of fluorescence detection and the high re-concentration factor reached by the on line SPE-HPLC allowed us to analyse and to quantify the target PAH at levels lower than those recommanded by the European authorithies.
