In “The Poet,” Emerson presents the reader with two voices that, at first glance, are irreconcilable with each other and yet seem to cohabit: the narrative voice of the essay, on the one hand, and the silent voice of the poet, on the other. Locked in a dialogue of the deaf, these voices alternate without ever answering each other. Thus, this paper endeavours to highlight the ongoing secret transaction between these two voices in “The Poet,” to underline the reasons for their impossible collision, and to explore the possibilities of their reconciliation in other essays.

Dans « The Poet », Emerson donne à lire deux voix de prime abord irréconciliables, qui semblent pourtant cohabiter : une première voix narrative, celle de l'essai, et une seconde voix silencieuse, celle du poète. Installées dans un dialogue de sourds, ces voix alternent sans jamais se répondre. Cet article propose ainsi de mettre en évidence la transaction secrète qui a cours entre ces deux voix dans « The Poet », de préciser les raisons de leur impossible collision, et d'explorer les possibilités de leur réconciliation dans d'autres essais.
