Résumé
Nicosia, the capital of the Lusignan kingdom of Cyprus (1192-1474), is a privileged area that allows us to observe the interactions between the court and the city in the late Middle Ages. Noble elites, mostly from Latin culture, shared the traditional values of chivalry but were also open to new forms of social relations involved in recruiting local staff and in being supplied by the craftsmen of the capital.
From the middle of the fourteenth century, the Cypriot court included in its ranks men of various social, ethnic or geographical backgrounds. The Lusignan court, motivated by political considerations but also probably due to real interest in popular religious culture, encouraged the development of local cults and assumed sponsorship activities of Greek churches, thus contributing to a better integration of the court in the urban environment.
