The books of Charles Trevelyan (1847) and John Mitchel (1860) constitute pioneering writings on the Great Famine and despite their extreme views they defined a framework which helps to understand later historiographical developments, from nationalism to revisionism and to post-revisionism. Beyond theoretical considerations as such, another factor of those historiographical trends is the context in which historians have worked: the state of Anglo-Irish relations and the conflict in Northern Ireland have also contributed to shaping interpretations of the Famine.

Les livres de Charles Trevelyan (1847) et John Mitchel (1860) constituent des écrits fondateurs sur la Grande Famine et, malgré leurs positions radicales, ont défini un cadre qui permet de mieux comprendre les développements historiographiques ultérieurs, depuis l’histoire nationaliste, en passant par l’approche révisionniste, jusqu’aux travaux post-révisionnistes. Outre les considérations théoriques, un autre facteur de ces évolutions historiographiques relève du contexte dans lequel les historiens travaillent, l’état des relations anglo-irlandaises et le conflit en Irlande du Nord ayant pesé sur les interprétations de la Famine.
