Représentations sociales des troubles mentaux chez les étudiants éducateurs spécialisés: un analyseur des enjeux de formation

Abstract : The objective of this research is to collect the social representations of student social workers (who will work with people with mental disorders or disabilities) regarding mental disorders. Indeed, the objective is to compare the results obtained to the international consensus and the data highlighted in specialised literature. This approach should make it possible to measure similarities and gaps, which may shed light on the pedagogical levers and articulations between the biomedical and socio-educational conceptions of mental disorders in the training of social workers. We conducted a questionnaire survey with 99 student social workers from three social work training institutions to examine their opinions and the processes involved in the building of their social representations regarding hyperactivity, autism and Alzheimer’s disease. This approach was processed qualitatively and quantitatively via the SPSS software. The results reveal a risk of over-medicalisation in social work practices and training, as well as a low level of reference to social risk factors for mental disorders, even though prevention is the core profession of social workers. Our study also points out students’ interest in clinical approaches, a weighted level of references in terms of inclusion approaches and practices, and the need to build in- creased training content for therapeutic patient education schemes: in addition to their intrinsic benefits, they would contribute to putting the issues of the professional helping relationship into practice in the field of social intervention.
