La Vie d’Ésope : une biographie comique

Abstract : The Life of Aesop is a comic biography, firstly because most of the text is concerned with the experiences of the fabulist as a slave ; Aesop shares with slaves of comedy many common features, among which the most prominent is ugliness. Besides, the world set up in the Life is a typically comic world, where prime of place is given to scatology, eroticism and misogyny, and where authority is constantly ridiculed and normal hierarchy turned topsyturvy in a Saturnalian way. Closely connected with comedy, the Life of Aesop also bears evident similarities with collections of jokes such as the Philogelos, so much so that both works sometimes appear together in the manuscripts.
