Les conditions du lien d’identification mère-enseignante dans les situations de handicap de l’enfant

Abstract : The relationship between the mother and the teacher is a fraught relationship in primary school, all the more when the school-age child suffers from a handicap. And yet it is in such situations that the educational relationship is even more necessary to the child. We have tried to identify the conditions leading to the institution of an effective relationship between the mother and the teacher in a context fraught with identity and narcissistic issues. Research interviews with kindergarten teachers and mothers whose handicapped children were in the normal school system enabled us to analyse discourse showing a failure of identification processes in the encounters (no “in-between”) or in the contrary its success (presence of “in-between”). The IN-BETWEEN designates a space for meeting points and ideas held in common, in reference to Daniel Sibony’s concept (1991). It can only exist if both partners know how to put narcissistic issues in perspective in order to concentrate on the relationship. Between mothers and teachers, identification enables narcissism to be put in perspective, and conversely putting narcissism in perspective enables the relationship to last, with a spiral effect.
