From Anne of Green Gables to Anne with an E: the avatars of a Canadian heroine

Abstract : Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery’s acclaimed classic children’s novel Anne of Green Gables tells the adventures of Anne Shirley (with an –e), an 11-year-old, red-haired, freckled, talkative, imaginative orphan who is mistakenly sent for adoption to middle-aged siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert (they expected a boy) in the fictional small town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island and then gradually grows into a young woman in the only home she ever had. The novel has been adapted countless times in a variety of forms it was published in 1908 and its heroine is still as popular as ever. Adapting Canada’s most popular book ever yet another time is definitely a challenge, especially when all Anne lovers keep a fond memory of its most successful adaptation so far, Kevin Sullivan’s 1985 miniseries starring Megan Follows as Anne. The years surrounding and following the centenary of Anne have seen a surge of more Anne adaptations, down to the very last, somewhat controversial, CBC/Netflix Anne with an E. Does the latter, as it introduces new material in the source narrative, perpetuate the success of the original and/or compete with its numerous former adaptations? How does it update or reinvent the initial text to potentially appeal to new, contemporary audiences, while playing on the nostalgia of adult spectators who might feel entitled to have their say when it comes to their national icon? As it reinvests and reappraises the original fictional world in a radical and much darker way than its predecessors, does it really bring its audience back to the source novel? Such are a few questions this presentation will raise and try to answer.
