Les cisterciennes auvergnates face aux crises de la fin du Moyen Âge

Résumé : The Cistercians of the former diocese of Clermont in Auvergne are little known, for with the exception of the women’s communities of L’Éclache and Mègemont, their medieval archives have disappeared. After tracing the origins of these two houses and of La Vassin, this study deals with the period from 1340 to 1530. The sources show the lasting impact of wars and pestilence on the monastic population, as well as recruitment limited to the lower and middle aristocracy weakened by the crises. Yet these records also qualify the idea of decadence as conveyed especially by the statuta of the General Chapters. The nuns contin- ued to perform the religious services requested by their benefactors and, like other lords, the abbesses took their cases to the law to restore their temporalities. L’Éclache even managed to compensate for the temporary destruction of its mountain domains by increasing its revenues on the borders of the rich area of Limagne, where the abbey still maintained direct exploitation of its lands.
