Enjeux identitaires de l’apprentissage d’une langue étrangère par des élèves sourds : variations du rapport à soi et aux autres

Abstract : Deafness raises the question of otherness since both body and languageare involved. Deaf French students are required to learn a thirdlanguage (other than French and French Sign Language) – mostlyEnglish. This paper deals with the complexity of the relationshipsbetween deaf young people, foreign languages and foreign cultures. Thedata were collected through ethnographic fieldwork in severalspecialised and mainstream secondary schools. Findings show thatlearning a third foreign language can influence the boundaries betweendeaf people and hearing people, on the one hand, and between Frenchpeople and foreigners, on the other hand. Several case-studies based onstudents’ profile were examined and then combined.
