Le tempérament de l’enfant d’âge scolaire : Validation d’une version française du questionnaire de Rothbart (Temperament in Middle Childhood Questionnaire)

Abstract : The evaluation of temperament in typical children and children with emotional and/or behavioural disorders is a main topic for research and clinical assessment. Few French tools allowing the investigation of children’s temperament are available. This study was designed to validate a French version of Rothart’s questionnaire (Temperament in Middle Childhood Questionnaire). Parents of 391 children aged six to ten years filled in the questionnaire. Data analyses show that the scales have adequate internal consistency and significant relation with the total score. An exploratory factor analysis revealed a four-factor structure allowing a confirmatory analysis. This structure is similar to Rothbart’s model of temperament in middle childhood. Finally, gender differences in expression of temperament appeared congruent with previous results in the literature.

The psychometric properties of the Temperament in Middle Childhood Questionnaire (French version), the fact that it is easy to administer and to score, and its capacity to provide information on several dimensions of children’s temperament make it an interesting tool to use in the exploration of children’s development.
