Liberté et propriété. Sur l’économie politique et le républicanisme de Condorcet
Abstract
Condorcet is generally considered one of the emblematic representatives of the Rights of Man. Yet in his concept of the relationship between liberty and property, he is essentially trying to escape from the constraints of modern natural law and liberty conceived as non-domination. He can best be understood as a theoretician of rational choice and of the liberty of non-interference. His brand of republicanism regards less the citizenthan man in his economic dimension, thus bringing him closer to the thought of Jean-Baptiste Say than to that of Thomas Paine.
Condorcet est généralement considéré comme un des représentants emblématiques des droits de l’homme. Or, lorsque l’on étudie sa conception du lien entre liberté et propriété, on constate qu’il s’efforce essentiellement d’échapper aux contraintes du droit naturel moderne et à la liberté conçue comme non-domination. Il doit plutôt être appréhendé comme un théoricien du choix rationnel et de la liberté comme non-interférence. Son républicanisme qui considère moins le citoyen que l’homme dans sa dimension économique le rapproche davantage de Jean-Baptiste Say que de Thomas Paine.
