Être ou devoir être ? Quand l’identité devient une injonction. Le cas des Palestiniens en France

Abstract : This paper is based on a fieldwork conducted among the Palestinian diaspora in France between 2012 and 2016. The first part deals with an experience shared by the respondents: the revelation of their Palestinian identity in exile producing an external obligation to position themselves vis-à-vis their origins. These expectations led some Palestinians to adopt identity strategies that vary depending on the context, the situation of interaction and their own migration history. The focus of the second part is placed on the artistic sphere. Artists, because they are known to be Palestinians, cannot escape their identity by concealing it. Therefore, the study of this particular environment provides an illustration of how Palestinian artists are forced to speak “as Palestinians”. Artists are compelled to realise and represent the Palestinian cause through their work.
