Ivan le Superbe ou Mosjoukine en correspondance

Abstract : This paper presents a few letters which were sent to Ivan Mosjoukine in France during the 1920s and which are now kept in the collection devoted to the actor in the RGALI (Moscow). The first letters describe Abel Gance’s attempts between the end of 1923 and summer 1924 to convince Mosjoukine to play Napoléon in his movie about the French Emperor. Other documents are related to an argument opposing in 1925 the actor to the Ciné-Club de France (an early film society). At last, a letter written by a woodworker in 1928 is evidence of Mosjoukine’s appeal to the public, and furthermore reveals the relationship between the public’s love of stars and their love of movies in general. Thus, through these documents one can appreciate more clearly the peculiar status of this actor described by the critic Juan Arroy at the end of the 1920s as the « only international star of the French cinema ».
