Raconter ou lire une histoire ? Enquête sur les histoires insérées dans les narrations fictionnelles en prose des Scudéry

Abstract : The corpus studied was composed of four novels (1641-1663) and eight short stories (1661- 1692). It reveals the importance of the oral element which can be attributed not so much to the oral source of the narration but to an aesthetic of emotion, prosopopeia being considered the most likely to move the reader. The principal narrator in the novels therefore delegates the telling of the story to secondary narrators, who improvise orally stories in which they, in turn, delegate the story-telling to their characters. It can also be seen that, unlike the stories inserted in the novels, the short-stories are generally presented as being written accounts and not of improvised oral origin. These short stories are inserted, with one exception, into conversations which comment upon them. They are not read when alone, in silence, but aloud to a group of acquaintances or friends. Furthermore, even if these narratives give the impression of being independent tales, the first persan still intervenes, albeit discretely and who directly addresses the reader just as the secondary narrator in the novels addressed his listener. The study has th us shawn that there is a reticence about the anonymity of the relationship between the author and the reader since printing was invented, on the one hand, and, on the other, a strong desire to control the interpretation of fictional narratives, whereas the printed version lends itself to a freedom of interpretation.
