Harold, Harald, Guillaume et les autres : prétentions et prétendants à la succession d'Édouard le Confesseur (1042-1066)

Abstract : The events of the year 1066 in England are often reduced to a competition between the three main candidates for the succession of King Edward the Confessor. In reality, if we take into account the whole of the reign (1042-1066) and if we widen the circle of the competition to all those who, for various reasons, could not or wished not to try their luck that year, we realize that the number of potential heirs was much larger. In the absence of a successor clearly and unanimously recognized during the lifetime of the king, several of his relatives far or distant, in England, Scandinavia or the north of France, were actually considered as potential successors or could have been put forward at various times of the reign. Through the study of inheritance practices during an unstable equilibrium, this article allows us to reflect on the nature of royal power in 11th century England.
