Lean expansion to supply chain actors : towards more performance?

Abstract : The objective of this research is to understand whether the extension of lean implementation to the supply chain actors would have an impact on performance. It conceptualises the lean supply chain as a set of tools mobilised within the company, but also as practices used to optimise interactions with suppliers and customers. More specifically, it is interested in the impact of the combination of internal and external lean on two fundamental indicators of operational performance: scrap and batch sizes. A sample of 171 French production sites was created. The results show, in terms of the operational performance, the existence of a statistically significant difference between the companies having opted for the extended lean and the other companies of the sample. This study highlights the additive effect of internal lean and external lean on operational performance.
