Stendhal « Narcisse historien » : écriture de soi, écriture de l’Histoire dans Vie de Henry Brulard

Abstract : Written almost contemporaneously to Mémoires d’un touriste and Mémoires sur Napoléon, Vie de Henry Brulard articulates the two projects that these writings continued each on their behalf: the personal story on one hand, the historical narrative on the other. Innovatively in the memorist field in 1830, Stendhal combines this dual intent by inserting in his experimental autobiography self-history in world history. This is an opportunity for him to evaluate the gap between historicity and singularity of the self. This paper intends to measure the place and functions of History as a mirror revealing an identity in search of itself.
