For et la construction des espaces référentiels

Abstract : This paper, which is set within Culioli’s theoretical framework, is the continuation of another article entitled “De quelques emplois de for” and consequently it only deals with the values of for as a preposition that have not been dealt with in the preceding article, namely “duration”, “point of view” and “standard”. It is shown that, just as with its other values, for can be analysed as the marker of a hiatus, but in this case respectively temporal, subjective and referential. The building of this hiatus can be metalinguistically interpreted as indicating either quantitative discontinuity, qualitative otherness or subjective valuation. These three theoretical concepts appear indeed to be far better suited to account both syntactically and semantically for the three values of for under consideration than the systematic resorting to extralinguistic factors that is still too often favoured in the linguistic analysis of prepositions.
