Entre variantes et variations : le cas de "in between"

Abstract : Between and in between are usually considered as being in free variation in Standard English. But, in spite of the quasi-synonymy of some of their occurrences, it appears that each of the prepositions in and between retains its own characteristics within the complex preposition, which at once restrain and increase the possibilities of occurrence of in between compared to between. We are not faced with a case of accidental, anarchic and uncontrolled proliferation of the English language, but with the exploitation of the properties of two of its markers, which does not defy analysis, but can on the contrary be accounted for by means of a metalinguistic system of representation, such as the “Théorie des Opérations Enonciatives” within the framework of which the present paper is set.
