L’Hôte de Camus à l’épreuve du 9e Art par la médiation de Ferrandez : l’implicite peut-il s’incarner en vignettes ?

Abstract : While adapting a story as complex as The Guest into a “graphic novel”, Ferrandez faced a real intersemiotic challenge in 2009. Does the plot set in drawings not take the risk of betraying the implicit message at the heart of Camus’s text? It is the question this study addresses. First of all, all the techniques characterizing the Ninth Art (the Graphic Art) that are used to enhance the storytelling of The Guest are analyzed here, particularly the arrangement of the series of drawings which help reinforce the narrative continuity of the story. Moreover, the hermeneutic impact of some voluntary editorial choices on one side, of some original artistic license by Ferrandez on the other, is developed here. However, these decisions made by the artist do not alter the fundamental ambiguity of the plot. In the last part of the “graphic novel”, this study shows the remarkable density and depth of the original story and its successful graphic rendition, both influenced by the themes of hospitality, alterity, duty, and both enhanced by an irony which torments the reader without bringing any conclusion.
