Hydrodynamics of Raz Blanchard: HF Radar Measurements

Résumé

Small inaccuracies (10%) in the estimates of the hydrodynamic current used to quantify tidal stream energy resources can lead to errors of 30% in the results of the latter. An important part of this error arises from neglecting wave-current interactions in the numerical models used to estimate the resource; a limitation that is in part due to the lack of data to validate the modelled results. To overcome this issue, the HYD2M project (HYDrodynamics of Raz Blanchard: Measurements and Modelling) aims to collect a comprehensive dataset at Raz Blanchard (Alderney Race), an area with one of the highest tidal regimes in Europe (up to 12 knots). These measurements are expected to further the understanding of the tidal current structure, and help to improve and validate numerical models. The temporal and spatial structure of waves and surface currents will be monitored using HF oceanographic radar. Each of the two radar stations that compose the system will operate at two different frequencies (13.5 and 24.5 MHz) to ensure that the wide range of sea-states occurring in the area can be adequately measured. This dual frequency approach will provide an excellent opportunity for improving the HF radar wave estimates. The challenges of the deployment arise from the high topographic complexity and extreme conditions that characterise the area, where the speed of the current is comparable to that of the waves responsible for the main backscatter contributions used by the HF radar measuring technique. This can complicate the interpretation of the measurements, and will require the adaptation of the algorithms currently used to process the radar signal. This experiment will therefore push the HF radar technology to its limits. With the support of data acquired with two other radar systems (VHF and X-Band) and multiple in situ devices for calibration and validation, this will provide a unique opportunity for the improvement and refinement of the HF radar technique.
