Démêlés autour d’un Mélo : Bernstein aux débuts du cinéma parlant

Abstract : Between 1932 and 1933, the “Mélo Case” opposed Henry Bernstein and the producers of the first French talking picture adapted from his work. This paper studies the relation between the author and the movies, it also examines the way Bernstein actively involved himself both in court and newspapers in defending his cause, and it finally analyses how the affair ended. Thus, it tries to understand who Bernstein was as a public and private figure at the beginning of the 1930s.
