Résumé
Between 1932 and 1933, the “Mélo Case” opposed Henry Bernstein and the producers of the first French talking picture adapted from his work. This paper studies the relation between the author and the movies, it also examines the way Bernstein actively involved himself both in court and newspapers in defending his cause, and it finally analyses how the affair ended. Thus, it tries to understand who Bernstein was as a public and private figure at the beginning of the 1930s.
Entre 1932 et 1933, l’« affaire Mélo » opposa violemment Henry Bernstein aux producteurs du premier film parlant français adapté de son répertoire. En revenant sur les rapports du dramaturge au cinéma, en analysant son engagement extrêmement actif au tribunal comme dans la presse, en examinant enfin l’issue du conflit, cet article entreprend de cerner la figure publique de Bernstein au début des années 1930, tout en affinant le portrait de sa personnalité privée.
