L'évangélisation des morisques ou comment effacer les frontières religieuses

Abstract : In 1609 began the first wave of expulsion of the Moriscos, a decision which was taken by the highest echelons of power after having noticed the failure of the policy of assimilation and evangelization of the minority and after putting all responsibility of that decision on it. It seemed that the Moriscos couldn’t be assimilated, were resistant to a change of identity and also represented a danger to society. But in the preservation of religious and ethnic boundaries between old Christians and new Christians, responsibilities were divided: a majority of Moriscos remained committed to their religion and their particularisms despite the assimilation offensive, but a majority of old Christian was not prepared to accept them in a society obsessed with purity of blood and still marked by the eight centuries of Muslim presence in Spain. The policy of evangelization, which targeted primarily children, did not manage to erase the boundaries which stood between them.
