Benveniste entre les lignes. Contribution à l’étude de l’imaginaire linguistique des linguistes

Abstract : Émile Benveniste's works develop different theoretical areas letting emerge, beyond their degree of technicality, an imaginary of language. Such specific body of knowledge and attitudes has been traditionally left aside by studies in the epistemology of linguistics. However, as a research device, it allows us to investigate the language of linguistics in that it is revealing of the circulation of ideas and sources nourishing the conscience of language, even for the professional linguist at work. In the wake of J.-Cl. Milner's and F. Provenzano's contributions about Benveniste's political imaginary, the following article proposes a tentative reading of his texts by questioning if and how a certain literary and political imagery traverses his scientific production, manifesting itself inside and through his writings. Notably, the listening to echoes of A. Artaud and of J.-P. Sartre eventually found in some texts will help highlighting a part of the linguistic imaginary at play in the work of Benveniste.
