The event in the cultural history of sport: a historiographical essay

Abstract : Historians have studied sports events using very different references, methods and corpuses. This article proposes an international historiographical assessment and shows the dialectic between the research subjects and the scientific orientations. The approach focuses on questions of identity in order to review the cultural components of the events and to address the fundamental issues around sport: the affirmation of the individual and the collective, the international diffusion of sport, its politization, the role of the media, its educational aspect, and so on. By doing so, this article brings to the fore the interest of sports events for researchers in cultural history.
