The event in the cultural history of sport: a historiographical essay
L’événement en histoire culturelle du sport : essai d’historiographie
Abstract
Historians have studied sports events using very different references, methods and corpuses. This article proposes an international historiographical assessment and shows the dialectic between the research subjects and the scientific orientations. The approach focuses on questions of identity in order to review the cultural components of the events and to address the fundamental issues around sport: the affirmation of the individual and the collective, the international diffusion of sport, its politization, the role of the media, its educational aspect, and so on. By doing so, this article brings to the fore the interest of sports events for researchers in cultural history.
Les événements sportifs ont été abordés par les historiens en utilisant des références, des méthodes et des corpus très différents. Cet article propose un bilan historiographique international, montrant la dialectique entre les objets de recherche et les orientations scientifiques. L’approche par la problématique de l’identité permet de passer en revue les composantes culturelles des événements et de revenir sur les grandes questions du sport : l’affirmation de l’individu et du collectif, la diffusion internationale du sport, sa politisation, le rôle des médias, sa composante éducative, etc. Ce faisant, cet article met en évidence tout l’intérêt de l’événement sportif pour les chercheurs en histoire culturelle.
