L'intelligence de la pitié : phénoménologie de la communauté

Abstract : There is always something unbearable about pity yet a man without pity would be almost inhuman. This paradox reveals the necessity to examine the essence of pity, in order to distinguish fake pity - dangerous and disdainful - from that which comprises our humanity. Recognition of authentic pity, which respects others in their irreplaceable singularity and provides us with the intelligence of what we must do for them, allows us to free ourselves from both moralism and from an abstract rational morality, in order to envisage a tangible ethic in which the human community is above all one of suffering and joy.
