Lectures cléricales en milieu rural : l'étonnante bibliothèque de François Mourier, curé de Pailharès au début du XVIIIe siècle

Abstract : The library of François Mourier, priest of the small village of Pailherès, in Ardèche (France), from 1710 to 1724, present us an original picture of clerical readings in rural environment at the beginning of Enlightenment. Dense and varied, his collection of 583 titles reveals an open mind not only to religion (39,6 %), but also to medicine (13,7 %), law (12 %), history (9,8 %), philosophy (7,4 %), poetry (4,5 %), and mathematics (2,7 %). Marked by the militant and austere Catholicism of Counter-Reformation, open to historical and doctrinal comprehension of all kinds of heresy, the library reveals a great interest in science and cartesian thought. Fruit of efforts of Jesuits and teaching congregations as Oratorians for religious education, such a collection is an interessant conciliation between the weight of classical culture and the opening to rising ideas of Enlightenment.
