Pour une linguistique des ajustements énonciatifs : Pour (ne pas) conclure

Abstract : The present paper focusses on the concept of adjustment in Antoine Culioli’s Theory of Enunciative Operations. After a summary of its meanings in ordinary language, the perspective is put on the metalinguistic acception of the word “adjustment” in a theoretical framework based on language revisited in terms of a meaningful activity, both dynamic and adjustable, on the part of speakers, which refers to a conception of communication dealing with felicitous as well as infelicitous utterances. Semantic invariance (stability) coexists with a variety of contextual and pragmatic meanings (deformability), corresponding to an unmarked level of adjustment. A marked level of adjustment may also be taken into account either when subjective modulations based on shared knowledge prevail or when rectifying reformulations occur in a situation of misunderstanding. Enunciative (intersubjective) adjustments and readjustments are thus at the core of Antoine Culioli’s linguistics.
