Essentialisme enfantin lié au genre et prise en compte de l'environnement social : une étude auprès d'enfants de 5 à 11 ans

Abstract : A study bas been undertaken in order to examine to what extent children understand the influence that the social environment bas on the way in which people undertake sex-roles. With this goal in mind we chose to follow the technique used in a study carried out by Taylor (1996): we presented stories to five to eleven year olds, in which a child, boy or girl, was growing up in a special environment composed entirely of people of his or her sex, or entirely of people of the opposite sex. Then, we offered a list of different sexually stereotyped traits and jobs and the children had to point out those which would best suit or would most likely be chosen by the child concemed once he would be an adult. ln order to make this task more concrete, we gave various indications about the different activities associated with these unisex environments. The results show that from the age of seven children are aware of the influence of the sexual environment. The question of childhood essentialism is finally discussed.
