Culture et identité sexuelle : figures historiques et mythiques de la transgression de l’ordre naturel des sexes

Abstract : In the context of a historical and anthropological approach, this article deals with the cultural and mythical figures of sexuality outside of natural norms and discusses the ways in which culture shapes sexuality in order to create a reasoned-out human construction. To this end, it presents cases where due to natural reasons (hermaphroditism), social beliefs (the mythical transgression of the sexes), or individuality itself (trans-sexuality) the weight of culture becomes particularly visible in the sexual problemic. The analysis centers on each of the three cases cited above and the way in which society redefines, in relation to its own values, sexual dimorphism as well as the correpondance between biological sex and sexual/gender identity. Tha author concludes with the thesis that if sex appears as a sort of social ventriloquism, the individual, nevertheless, remains the anchorpoint of this redefinition. In other words, the individual plays a role that is not merely passive in the construction of his sexual identity.
