Enhancing Kaizen events with an ergonomic approach to achieve optimal operational performance and positive occupational health outcomes

The context of this thesis is the much-debated issue regarding the implementation by companies of a lean-manufacturing organization. It aims to guide stakeholders in the design of the necessary conditions for the implementation of a continuous improvement process to promote operational performance and enhance occupational health outcomes.More specifically, the process of one of the continuous improvement methods, a Kaizen event, was enriched with an ergonomic approach in order to give participants the means to take into consideration the real-life work of individuals and teams of operators. The objective was to strengthen the work carried out by participants in the off-production improvement process aiming to resolve problems related to continuous improvement issues, in order to ultimately improve the on-site production work.The Kaizen event method was enhanced along 4 axes of improvement – 1) clearly defining the needs ; 2) training for and carrying out an ergonomic analysis of the work ; 3) providing tools for organizing participation ; 4) adapting the timing to the ongoing design process and the company’s specific situation. This approach improved the design and implementation process leading to changes that better addressed the real-life concerns of the workers. These changes were more favourable towards reconciling operational objectives and positive occupational health outcomes.In light of the results, the concept of « work aiming for improvement » carried out byparticipants in Kaizen events favourable both to promoting operational performance and occupational health outcomes has been characterized. In a developmental perspective, an approach for the improvement of the Kaizen method and an intervention methodology to contribute to the design phase of a Kaizen event have been presented.
Cette thèse s’inscrit dans le contexte controversé des entreprises ayant adopté uneorganisation de type lean manufacturing. Elle vise à outiller les acteurs de la conception sur les conditions nécessaires au déploiement d’une amélioration continue favorable à l’articulation de la performance opérationnelle et de la santé au travail dans ces organisations.Plus spécifiquement, nous avons décidé d’enrichir la démarche de l’une des méthodes d’amélioration continue, le chantier Kaizen, par une démarche ergonomique, afin de donner les moyens aux participants du chantier de prendre en compte le travail réel individuel et collectif des opérateurs. Nous avons donc cherché à enrichir le « travail d’amélioration hors production », qui vise la résolution de problèmes dans les dispositifs d’amélioration continue, en vue d’améliorer le « travail en situation de production ».La démarche de chantier Kaizen a été enrichie par 4 axes d’amélioration qui sont l’instruction de la demande, la formation-action à l’analyse ergonomique du travail, l’instrumentation de la participation ainsi que le déroulement temporel s’adaptant auprocessus de conception et au contexte de l’entreprise. Nous avons montré que cette démarche a favorisé un processus de conception menant à des transformations plus en lien avec le travail réel des opérateurs et ainsi plus favorable à la conciliation de l’atteinte des objectifs opérationnels et de santé au travail.À la lumière de nos résultats, nous avons proposé de caractériser un « travaild’amélioration » propice à l’articulation de la performance opérationnelle et de la santé au travail dans les chantiers Kaizen. Dans une perspective développementale, nous avons également proposé une amélioration de cette démarche ainsi qu’une contribution méthodologique pour intervenir dans les dispositifs de conception en mode projet de type chantiers Kaizen.
